In a small town rumors flew around amongst the citizens for many years about a killer living in the old Maxwell Mansion. The mansion, tucked away in the forest, had only a tall clock tower marking its location. Rumor has it that a family used to live there, but after the death of the mother and her children, the father left with his grief. Many people claim that the eldest child had come back to kill those who trespass on the property. This rumor is still alive and is fluttering around amongst teens at the high school, especially after one of their classmates, who claimed he was going to the house, disappeared one night, never to be seen again. The boy had many friends, and these friends were the ones most interested in the rumors. They want to know what could have happened to their friend and if the gory rumors are true. 
The main characters of this story, Robert “Bobby” Matthews and his seemingly mentally handicapped twin brother Daniel “Dan” Matthews live with their father in the mansion in the forest.  They had moved in a few months before the boy’s disappearance.  The twins, being inseparable, had been friends with the boy. The boy’s other friends, Jennifer Abbey, Laura Crawford, and Anne Gonzales were curious about the boy’s disappearance but they were more interested in boosting their popularity by solving the mystery than finding out what really happened. 
One night Laura and Anne decide to make their way to the Maxwell house, drunk as could be, and as they wander into the forest with a video camera and find that Bobby has already beat them there. With Bobby, the two girls enter the old overgrown mansion. Taping and stumbling their way through the mansion, Laura and Anne don’t notice Bobby leave their company. They enter a room on the top floor to sit and take a drink of what’s left of their alcohol; their lives are ended by the infamous killer of the Maxwell Mansion the fondly named “Scissorman”, who cuts off their heads with a large scissor-like bladed tool. Once they are dead, the killer’s mask is removed, and it is Bobby who has been doing this all along, by the orders of his father.
Knowing the tape recorder has been taping all night, Bobby proceeds to destroy it, only to have some of the footage survive.  The footage showing the appearance of Scissorman appears in the news, much to the anger of the twin’s father. Their father finally appears, furious with Bobby’s mistake of allowing that bit of footage to escape the house; he forces him to do the unthinkable. They were to pretend they were moving and Bobby has to kill his last friend and the only survivor of those interested in entering the house, Jennifer. With no choice Bobby tricks her into the house and through a series of chases and small physical encounters, Jennifer is caught and beheaded by Bobby. The father, satisfied, keeps them at the Maxwell house until their father sells the boys out to a scientist who takes them away in chains for experimentation.
